Windows 7 upgrade
« on: June 25, 2009, 08:28:32 AM »
Microsoft recently announced retail pricing for Windows 7 that was at or below comparable Windows Vista prices, while also offering a chance for people to preorder the software at a substantial discount.

From Friday through July 11, consumers in the U.S. will be able to buy an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home premium for $49 or Windows 7 Professional for $99.

That offer is good for both XP and Windows Vista PCs, regardless of whether someone has been trying out the pre-release version of the operating system.

The offer, however, is limited in both duration and by the number of copies Microsoft is willing to sell, although Microsoft would not specify that figure. The upgrade will be available at Amazon, Best Buy, Microsoft's own store, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Costco, Staples, Wal-Mart and several other retailers.

As reported on the CNN website

Do it quick because word is that the 1/2 price promo won't last long. I just preordered 3 copies of Win 7 Home Pro ($49 each).

The store is VERY slow right now because of the demand.

Sweet deals like this always come at inopportune times.  I'll just stick to my current method of updating.

Liam, I might not need two copies. When it gets here maybe I'll be able to hook you up.

Appreciate the gesture, but it'll be a while before I can afford much of anything recreational (computers are recreational apparently).  Still looking at another week or two before work starts on our next job, so $$ is and has been pretty tight.

I hope so because I thought the same thing after I purchased. However, in the beta the same keys were usable for 32 or 64 bit.

Liam - If I'm not going to need it you can have it and pay me when ever. I ordered it thinking my mom might want it. Then I started thinking I'm not sure she can handle a change in an opereting system when she barely can figure out the one she uses now.

Thanks, Shakes.  Really appreciate it.  Let me know what you end up deciding.

I finally updated to the RC release.  Was a much smoother install then the Beta.  Especially the audio, which with the Beta and Vista releases wasn't natively supported and required all kinds of hoops I had to jump through.  Makes me feel as though the final release is going to be pain free.  ;)

You can't upgrade Windows XP: If you want to upgrade a PC from XP to 7, you'll need to start anew, reinstalling all of your apps and re-creating your settings. (Windows Vista users can opt to install 7 on top of their current OS, although not in every possible scenario.) Microsoft's decision not to enable XP-to-7 upgrades is defensible — a fresh install will probably be more reliable than one plunked down on top of XP's eight-year-old underpinnings — but it will scare off some XP users who would probably love Windows 7 once they got it up and running.

Pre-order the newest version of Windows today
Windows 7 was built around your feedback, so you'll see a lot of things you've asked for. You asked us to make everyday tasks faster and easier, to make your PC work the way you want it to, and to make it possible to do new things. And that's exactly what we've done. See how it's come to life.

You qualify for Windows 7 upgrade versions if you are running genuine Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 on your PC.

So upgrade version, which I thought was install over the top, actually is start from scratch? Bummer. I hate starting from scratch. Although eliminating the kids junk will be a bonus

Yes, in this case "upgrade" means you are getting a better OS, not that you can take your XP installation and turn it into a 7 installation.

And it definitely is better to start from scratch.

(dig dig dig) With the release fast approaching I have a few questions. Is everyone going to install it right away or wait for the enevitable fix's to come first? Also how does everyone store stuff like music and pictures during the transition? I don't have anything right now but figure I have to get something. Is an external hard drive the best ( meaning the cheapest) way to go? I don't have gobs of pics and music and stuff (Barry Manilow may have wrote the songs but he didn't record them all!) but my wife takes alot of pics. What are your thought on this Hobson?( Arthur reference)

Add a new hard drive to install win7 on. That way you keep everything, and have dual boot option then.

How much space you need? You can always just buy or store them on usb cards untill your up and running. I got ten 4gb usb drives last year for stocking stuffers at $5 each. Im sure now almost a year later you can get an 8gb one for the same price. As for your first questions Im installing ASAP and on a new pc. The beta version which has been out for awhile now has been nothing but great so I do expect the retail version to be the same or better from the start.
