new card?
« on: October 01, 2011, 01:20:26 PM »
I have a HD 4870 x2, which has been very good to me.  BF3, however, may be more than it can handle (DX11?). Opinions on whether I should get a new card and, if so, which one? I'm so out of touch when it comes to the evolution of gpus and cards that I could really use some guidance.

Thanks in advance for any.

p.s. I have a ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard, which is PCI Express 2.0, if that matters.

I wish the choices were easier to understand.

The 4870x2 should run the game fine with high settings. What rez do you use, and whats your full PC specs?

If you want a basic idea of where your card stacks up AMD to NVIDIA, just how high check this chart out.

Full Specs, if my records (and what I posted here two years ago) is correct:

 * Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe

    * Chipset: Intel X58

    * Other Features: Dual Gigabit LAN, RAID 0/1

    * CPU: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz Quad Core
    * Integrated DDR3 Controller
    * 8MB of Cache

    * Video: Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB

    * Memory:
    * 6GB(3x2GB) DDR3 PC10600 Triple Channel

    * Hard Drives: WD Velociraptor 300G 10000RPM SATA2 Boot Drive;1TB (1024GB) SATA2 7200rpm 32M Cache Storage Drive

    * DVDRW: 6x Blu-Ray Reader/16X +-RW Dual Layer Burner

    * Case: Antec Nine Hundred Two

    * Power Supply: Antec True Power 1000W

I checked out the site, Smonkey, and I would expect it to work fine, but it definitely didn't do the job with the beta BF3.

Maybe I need to tweak something or sacrifice a chicken?

Maybe more RAM?

I have a very similar build except I have the 950 and the 5870. 4870 x2 is on the same level as the 5870. I run 1680x1050 native with everything on high or higher and get about an avg of 60 frames. Are your drivers up to date? Also what resolution you run?

Drivers are current. I have to check whereni left the resolution set during my last attempt. I wonder if i am not using both gpus. Maybe there is a supplemental driver.

gren you could always try to turn down some of the settings, it probably auto set too high for you cards and it might be messing things up, worth a try anyways  :shrug:

I did try turning stuff down. I may just have to accept that 3 years for a card is a good run and retire the pooch.

I bought and installed a GTX 570 this morning. WOW! The difference in COD is surprising (i.e., I was able to crank everything up) and I was able to play BF3 with no problem at all.

I went with the GTX 570 over the ATI HD 6950 simply because my research (such as it was) suggested that it had better performance and the price difference was worth it to me - perhaps delaying the purchase of a new card a bit longer.
