Speaking for the console gamer, it's not like we have much of a choice here.
I'm personally not opposed to paying for DLC -- yes, I used to enjoy free maps with PC games back when I was a PC gamer, but I don't think $3 per maps is much of a rip-off, when compared with other entertainment expenses. I may spend $20 on a Blu-Ray and never get the same value for my money that I get for a $3 map.
Now, I do think that the MMO model for console FPS games is a mistake, and I'm not willing to pay a monthly fee on top of my annual XBOX Live subscription. They'd have to deliver a pretty incredible experience beyond what I've been enjoying for the past 12 years for me to shell out more money. XBOX Live is worth it for the matchmaking and communications services it provides -- granted, Steam is almost matching it service for service for free, but it's way ahead of PSN which is free and sucks.
That said, there is not currently a single successful console fee-based console MMO, so I think it's very unlikely that this will come to pass. If Microsoft couldn't get a WOW-clone based in the Halo universe off the ground, there's no way someone else will do it with COD.
By the way, I think you guys will be happy to learn that there will be dedicated servers for Call of Duty: Black Ops. It's a Treyarch game, but it looks like they listened to criticism regarding MW2.
