Doc,

Being in the telecom business I'm familiar with this issue.  I would bet my next paycheck that your ISP is oversubscribing the link to ATT.  It's evident in lines 4 and 5.  Line 5 being the first ATT router jumping by 40ms or so.  I'm also concerned that your first hop takes 63ms.  Seems long to me.  Could indicate an issue locally that the local network (ie. your neighborhood) is oversubscribed as well.

Here's my info:

My suggestion is to go to www.dslreports.com and sign up.  Then go to TOOLS and run some of the tests located there.  Specifically the Line Packet Loss Test, and the Tweak Test.  Once that's done sign up for the 24/7 Line Monnitoring and let it accumulate about a weeks worth of data.  If that info supports the above argument (that the network is oversubscribed/overutilized) then forward the reports to the ISP and demand that an upgrade happen.  They will be more likely to listen to your argument when you have supporting data.  I also wouldn't mention that online gaming is involved as they are more likely to dismiss you as a kook that is looking for an edge over everyone else.  (based on previous experiences)

Yea, Pat and I went through a bunch of stuff the other night to make sure it wasn't on his end.  Everything seems to check out as far as his comp goes, but after the modem he runs into trouble.  I'm inclined to agree with what Rob said about the neighborhood being oversubscribed.

Consider a bad wire from your house to the street?

A friend of mine in my neighborhood had all kinds of problems (even though we are on the same system and live three doors apart).  He discovered that the line in his yard was damaged (i.e., cut through the insulation and to the wire).  Fixed that and all is well.

Wouldn't oversubscription manifest in the ping being good at low usage times?  It seems that doc's connection is bad even late at night.

That's a valid point Grendel.  I suspect two problems the local then the network side.  I bet the network side is only temporary.  Most major networks (mine included) utilize a 50% rule.  When bandwidth or cpu utilization reach 50% they expand accordingly.  Takes time to implement however.

Also are we talking Cable or DSL here?

That's what I thought, too Gren, but you'd be suprised how late local network traffic can be heavy.  Especially if a lot of ppl are computer savvy and like to dl a thing or two (most doing this while they're asleep hoping that it'll be faster and done so they have all the BW they need during the times they really need it).

About 6 months ago I was getting disconnects every 10 mins or so, the tech guy came over, and checked the modems signal IE and found it low, changed something on the power node on the street and the fuse box in the basement and give us new wires and it seemed to fix it. Have you checked the modems internal ip and checked the signal there?
